AC scores first win of the year in split with Bates

The Austin College baseball team got its first win of the season with a 9-7 victory over Bates College in the first game of their doubleheader on Tuesday, but a ’Roo rally in game two fell short with Bates handing the team a 7-6 loss. The ‘Roos are now 1-7 overall this season.

In game one, the ‘Roos jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning when Scott Cottingham drove in a run, Austin Vaughan drew a walk with the bases loaded and Shane Williams ripped a two run single. Mason Leech added an RBI single to cap off the inning. Bates would get one run back in the second, and a two run double from Gordy Webb helped the Bobcats close the gap with a four run third inning to knot the game at 5-5.

Austin College regained the lead in bottom of the third when John Schulmeister and Vaughan scored, and the lead grew to 9-5 in the fifth when Vaughan scored on a Leech sacrifice fly and Andy White came home on an RBI single by Scooter Merritt. The Bobcats plated two runs in the sixth and had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, but a game-ending double play gave the ‘Roos the victory.

Cullen Calabria picked up the win in relief, tossing 5.0 innings and surrendering two runs. Williams finished the game 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in and Vaughan scored three times, drawing walks in each of his three plate appearances.

In game two the Bobcats took advantage of an error to plate five runs in the first inning, but Austin College got two runs back in the second when Chase Muder drove in a run and Schulmeister scored on an error. The ‘Roos added two more runs in the fourth, once again taking advantage of a Bates error and getting a run scoring sacrifice fly from Merritt to cut it to a 6-4 game.

Austin College completed their comeback when White and Brian Buehler came home to score in the bottom of the fifth, but Bates responded with a run in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. Austin College put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to capitalize.

Merritt went 2-for-3 with an RBI and White and Buehler each added a pair of hits and scored a run in the loss. Williams took the loss for Austin College, tossing 3.0 innings in relief and giving up one run on just one hit.

Austin College is home again this weekend when they host Southwestern University for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday. Game time for both games is set for 1:00 p.m.
