Ardmore announces new AD/head football coach

ARDMORE, OK - Douglas P. Wendel was chosen to lead the Ardmore Tigers football program next season as the new athletic director/head football coach.

Wendel comes to Ardmore from Eustace, Texas. He makes his return to Oklahoma after several years in the state of Texas. Wendel is a graduate of Eufala High school, and an alumnus of Oklahoma State University.

Former Ardmore Football coach Ronnie Tipps was on the search committee. He says after what he did in Eustace, he knew Wendel was the right man for the job.

"He was able to come in and kind of change the culture of the kids, the school, and the community just with his personality and the kind of person that he is," Tipps said.

Wendel says he and his family are excited to be headed to Southern Oklahoma.

"There were three things we came up with, and one was we wanted an exceptional town. We feel like Ardmore provides that. We wanted a school district with a strong track record of high standards, and third we wanted a place that could vie for a state championship," Wendel says.

Tipps says Wendel has his priorities in the right place.

"He was kid-centered, and if we, within our community, within our school district can make decisions that are based on kid-centered decisions, then I know we are going to be moving forward in a positive way."

Wendel's hiring was announced at Ardmore's school board meeting Monday night. Wendel is replacing local legend Larry McBroom.
