Austin College Dominant in Win over Schreiner

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team got a dominating pitching performance from Blaine Tew and took advantage of some early defensive miscues by Schreiner to earn a 10-1 win in the third and final game of the weekend series on Saturday.

The ‘Roos finished the weekend taking two of three from the Mountaineers to improve to 7-16 overall and 5-7 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

After a scoreless first, Austin College plated four runs after a dropped third strike kept the inning alive in the second. Schreiner looked to be out of trouble with two outs but Jeremy Halford beat the throw to first after the drop on the strikeout, and all four runs in the inning followed the error. James Arguello, Thomas Oberg, and Josh Coughennower each had an RBI single in the inning.

Schreiner got on the board in the third on a base hit by Sam Pistrui to make it 4-1, but Austin College once again took advantage of a defensive error in the fourth to plate two more runs and go ahead 6-1. Gus Daniel had an RBI single in the frame. The lead grew to 7-1 on an RBI single by Arguello in the fifth, and a sacrifice fly by Todd Takabuki in the sixth made it an 8-1 game.

Two more runs would come home for Austin College in the bottom of the eighth, as Takabuki ripped a single up the middle to score Oberg and Coughennower to make it 10-1 and Tew came back out in the ninth to close the door on Schreiner and earn the complete game victory.

Tew struck out eight batters while allowing one run on just four hits to earn the win, and Oberg and Coughennower each had three hits in the victory. Austin College racked up 15 hits in the game, with Arguello also going 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the offensive charge. Charlie Stewart took the loss for Schreiner, surrendering eight runs – only two earned – on 12 hits in 6.0 innings of work.
