Austin College Softball Takes One of Two from TLU

The Austin College softball team split its twin bill against Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday afternoon, getting a 4-3 walk off victory in extra innings in game one before falling 3-1 in a game two pitcher’s duel. The ‘Roos are now 11-25 overall on the year.

Texas Lutheran took advantage of a first inning error to get on the board first in game one, but Austin College answered in the bottom half of the inning when Charlotte Trudell singled and later came home on a grounder by Heather Farquhar. The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when Chelsea Delaney roped an RBI single, scoring Rachel Ramos to put the ‘Roos on top 2-1 heading into the last inning.

However, in the seventh the Bulldogs squared things up again on a Brittany Upton RBI single to send the game into extra innings. TLU grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth, but in the bottom half of the inning Jessica Baker scored on a single by Mallory Rossman, and Jenny Dowsey’s one out single scored Farquhar from third to give Austin College the victory.

Trudell went 2-for-3 to lead the ‘Roos offensively and Amber Pemberton picked up the win in relief, giving up one unearned run on no hits in 1.2 innings of work.

In game two the teams were scoreless through the first two innings, with TLU finally getting on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the third. The lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth inning, and while the ‘Roos would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Amanda Peiser scored on a fielder’s choice by Delaney, that would be as close as things would get the rest of the way.

Suzanne Beltran went 2-for-3 for the ‘Roos, who were limited to six hits in the game. Pemberton went the distance on the mound, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts in the loss.

Austin College wraps up the regular season this weekend when they host Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Hendrix College on Saturday and Sunday looking to earn a spot in the SCAC Tournament. The ‘Roos need to take two out of four games against the Warriors to earn the three seed.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
