Baseball Extends Winning Streak with Two Wins Over Dallas Christian

The East Central University baseball team moved their winning streak to six games, with two wins over Dallas Christian in non-conference action at Tiger Field. The Tigers earned a 4-1 win in game one of the double-header and an 11-7 victory in game two.

The Tigers (16-10) were led by senior Josh Lavender with a .667 batting average, four hits, three runs and five RBIs. Lavender was one of five players with two-or-more hits for the day.

Senior Robert Buitrago earned the win in a complete game one, allowing seven hits and four runs, while striking out four. Junior Icezack Flemming picked up the win in the second game, with 3.2 innings of work. Flemming added three strikeouts to his season total and allowed four hits and five runs.

ECU will return to the field this weekend for a three-game Great American Conference series with Southern Nazarene at Tiger Field. A single game is scheduled for Friday, March 21 at 2 p.m. and a double-header is slated to start at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 22.

Game 1
The teams held each other scoreless until the bottom of the third when ECU earned three runs on three hits and an error. Junior Bryce McKee started the inning with a single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Ty Huie. Lavender reached on a single to left center to put runners on first and second.

Donohoe reached on a fielder’s choice that left runners on the corners. That set up junior Nick Spini for an RBI with a double to left field. The final two runs then scored when junior David Terrazas reached on an error by the second baseman for the 3-0 lead.

The Crusaders (13-9) scored a run in the top of the fourth to cut the advantage to 3-1.

The Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-1 lead. Lavender singled up the middle and was sent to third when Donohoe doubled to left center. Terrazas earned the RBI with a sacrifice fly to center.

Both teams had chances to score in the final two innings, but held each other scoreless for the 4-1 final.

Game 2
The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. After two outs Spini hit a single up the middle and was sent to third when Terrazas singled to right field. Spini then scored when the Crusader’s pitcher threw a wild pitch.

ECU added four runs in the bottom of the second. Senior Ethan Gold started the inning with a walk. The bases were then loaded after McKee singled to left field and Huie walked. That set up Lavender for two RBIs with a single to right field. Huie scored on the double steal and Spini added an RBI with a double to right for the 5-0 lead.
The Crusaders scored two runs in the top of the third for a 5-2 score.

The Tigers responded with five runs in the bottom of the third for a 10-2 lead. Junior Casey Chenoweth singled, McKee doubled and Huie walked to load the bases. Lavender then earned three more RBIs with a triple off the right field fence.

Donohoe added an RBI with a double to right center. Terrazas kept the inning going by reaching on an error, while allowed senior Michael Mariano to earn an RBI when he struck out, but reached on a pass ball that scored a run.
DCC added three runs in the top of the fourth for a 10-5 advantage for ECU.

Sophomore Gavin Susca started things off in the bottom of the fifth with a single to right field and stole second. That put him in scoring position when Mariano reached on an error to give ECU an 11-5 lead.

The Crusaders put one more run in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh for the 11-7 final.
