Baseball Falls at Abilene Christian

The East Central University baseball team lost the first game of a four-game series against Abilene Christian, 2-14, at Crutcher Scott Field.

The Tigers (2-4) ended the game with six hits. Senior Mac Grace led ECU with two hits, including a double. Senior Will Grimes suffered the loss on the mound after 1.2 innings of action.

The Wildcats (3-2) got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the first. ECU followed with a run in the top of the second to tie the game at one.

Junior Ethan Gold started the inning out by earning a walk and was sent to third on a double to left field by Grace. Gold was able to score on the play after the left fielder committed an error.

However, in the bottom of the second and third ACU opened up the game, with five runs in each inning to take a 1-11 lead after the third. ACU then added three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 1-14 advantage.

The Tigers added a run in the top of sixth. Senior Justin Gibson opened the inning by singling to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior Jake Caton advanced Gibson to third with a fly ball to center field. Gibson scored when senior Benny Woodard grounded out to third to make the score 2-14.

The Tigers and the Wildcats will renew the series, Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. for the first game of a double header. The series will conclude, Sunday, Feb. 10 with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
