Baseball Falls in Opening Game Against Arkansas-Monticello

After a four-hour delay due to thunderstorms the East Central University baseball team dropped a 2-12 decision to Arkansas-Monticello in the first of three Great American Conference games.

The Tigers (7-23, 1-15 GAC) recorded four hits, including two by senior Benny Woodard and one each from juniors Ethan Gold and Josh Lavender.

Senior Robert Buitrago threw the first 5.1 innings of the game, striking out three and suffering the loss after allowing 10 hits and seven runs.

The Boll Weevils (20-13, 10-9 GAC) opened the scoring in the first inning, going up 0-1. The score remained that way until the fifth inning, when UAM added a second run (0-2).

The Boll Weevils opened up the lead with five-run sixth and seventh innings, for a 0-12 advantage.

The Tigers scored their two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Jake Caton started the one-out rally by being hit by a pitch. Freshman Brandon Maggia then hit into a fielder’s choice, but Caton remained on base due to an error.

Gold sent the first run across the plate with a single to right center and junior Brede Kochi was walked to load the bases. That set up senior Spencer Penrod to earn an RBI with a fielder’s choice.

ECU and the Boll Weevils will resume the series, Saturday, March 30 with the first game of the double-header slated for 10 a.m.
