Centre Sweeps 'Roo Men's and Women's Hoops Teams

’Roo Men’s Hoops Drops Third Straight

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College men’s basketball team got out to a hot start against visiting Centre College, but the Colonels forced the ‘Roos into 20 turnovers on their way to handing the team its third straight defeat on Friday evening in Hughey Gym. The ‘Roos are now 10-9 overall and 6-4 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Threes from Ransom Okpala and Jordan Hancock helped the ‘Roos race out to a 12-2 lead just three and a half minutes into the game, and a three by Colton Castle, a pair of free throws from Josh Saunders and a bucket by Greg Harrell extended the Austin College lead to 19-7 with 13:26 left before halftime. Austin College maintained that lead for most of the rest of the half, but after two free throws from Aaron Anwary gave Austin College a 29-18 lead with 4:11 left the Colonels started to chip away at the ‘Roo lead.

Greg Ross completed a three point play and Josh Karsner knocked down a three to quickly cut it to a 31-24 game, and after a pair of free throws by Jeff Mullaney, Ross scored again with 54 seconds left to cap off a 10-2 run and send the teams into halftime with the ‘Roos leading by only three points at 31-28.

The two teams went back and forth to start the second half, and a three from Bryon Ellis gave Centre its first lead of the game at 37-36 with 17:58 left in the game. Another three, this time from Karsner, put the Colonels up 40-36 and the lead grew to 46-38 with 12:34 left on the clock with the ‘Roos in the midst of a four minute stretch without a field goal.

Centre extended the lead to 50-39 before Antoine Thompson scored with 10:42 left, giving the ‘Roos their first field goal since the 15:12 mark and cutting the deficit back to single digits. Thompson scored twice more and Saunders added a basket as the ‘Roos closed the gap to 52-47, but a clutch three from Karsner pushed the lead back to eight at 55-47 with 6:18 remaining. Austin College would manage to cut the lead to 58-55 with 2:38 left, but Collin Lopez drilled another three with 2:16 left to help ice the game for the Colonels as they held off the ‘Roos down the stretch.

Saunders notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the ‘Roos and Thompson was the only other Austin College player to hit double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds. Hancock had a game-high five assists.

Ross scored a game-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds and Karsner hit four threes on his way to 14 points as the only other Colonel in double digits. Austin College owned a 39-23 rebounding edge in the game, but turned the ball over 10 more times than the Colonels and hit just 5-of-11 free throws in the second half.

Austin College returns to action tomorrow night when they host Sewanee with tip time set for 8:00 p.m. in Hughey Gym.

Cold Second Half Dooms ’Roo Women

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College led No. 24-ranked Centre College by two points at halftime, but a cold shooting second half helped lead to a 78-54 loss to the Colonels on Friday night in Hughey Gym. The ‘Roos are now 1-18 overall and 1-9 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the loss.

After falling into a quick 7-0 hole less than three minutes in, the ‘Roos started to get hot from behind the three point arc to pull within five at 16-11 on a three by Angeleena Young with 11:58 left in the half. The ‘Roos fought all the way back to knot things up with a three from Nikki Kincaid and a three point play by Christina Kime to square things at 18 with 8:54 left, and back to back threes from Kime gave Austin College a 24-20 lead with 7:40 remaining before the break.

Kincaid knocked down another three to make it 27-22, and after Centre battled back to grab a 32-31 lead, Kime drilled a deep three with the shot clock expiring to send the ‘Roos into halftime leading 34-32. Austin College hit eight threes in the first half, including four from Kime.

The Colonels got back to back threes from Bridget Winstead as they opened the second half on an 8-0 run to grab a 40-34 lead, but Lexi Beeson scored twice and Young hit another three to keep the ‘Roos in the game, trailing 47-41 with 14:09 left to play. The Colonels slowly started pulling away over the next few minutes, getting threes from Alyson Burke and Winstead to push it to a 13 point game, but two more threes from Young cut it to a 57-47 game with 10:02 left to play.

However, that’s as close as the ‘Roos would get as the team went without a field goal over the game’s final 6:42 and Centre’s Maggie Prewitt and Chelsea Benham took control down the stretch, combining for 14 points over the final 10 minutes of action.

Kime finished with 15 points and eight assists and Young added 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc to lead the ‘Roos, who shot just 17.1% from the field in the second half. Allison Taylor grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Austin College.

Benham scored 18 points and added eight rebounds to lead Centre and Prewitt scored 15 and had seven assists. Winstead went 4-of-6 from three to finish with 12 points.
