Davis beats Nowata, wins 2nd straight title

Davis' Trevor Merrill intercepted a pass at his 8-yard-line with 90 seconds left Friday to preserve the Wolves' 20-13 victory over Nowata and their second consecutive Oklahoma Class 2A high school football championship.

Wyatt Steigerwald had driven Nowata (14-1) to the Davis 24, but Merrill stepped in front of a pass over the middle to en the threat. Davis completed its second consecutive 15-0 season.

Blake Summers ran for 178 yards and had 38 yards passing Friday; a year ago he ran for 197 yards in Davis' come-from-behind victory over Millwood.

After Hunter Karlik's 9-yard run put Davis up 20-7 with 10:32 left, Steigerwald hit Scott Pruett for a 46-yard score. His 37-yard run in the first quarter gave his team a 7-0 lead.

Davis finished with 315 yards rushing.
