ECU Baseball Adds to Win Column with 12-4 Win over Oklahoma City

The East Central University baseball team moved to 20-10 overall with a 12-4 win over Oklahoma City in non-conference action at Tiger Field.

The Tigers saw six players earn multiple hits in the game, with juniors Garrett Donohoe and Luc Pomales and senior Ethan Gold all recording three hits. Gold and Pomales added three RBIs, while Donohoe tallied two.

ECU used four pitchers in the game, with sophomore Jake Wellington earning the win on the mound. Wellington threw five innings, striking out eight batters and allowing zero hits and runs.

After two scoreless innings, the Stars (19-7) opened the scoring with two runs in the third and the fourth innings for a 0-4 lead.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the fourth, with a single run. Donohoe and Pomales singled up the middle and Gold earned the RBI with a single through the right side.

ECU added five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. After the first out, OCU walked juniors Ty Huie, Dustin Torres and Donohoe to load the bases. Junior Nick Spini earned the first RBI with a single up the middle. Junior David Terrazas added a run with a single to left center and Pomales walked to score a run and leave the bases loaded. Gold singled up the middle for the fourth run and junior Casey Chenoweth singled through the left side for a 6-4 lead.

The Tigers kept adding to the lead, with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, for a 9-4 advantage. Huie started things off with a walk and was advanced to second on a wild pitch and third with a ground out. That set up Donohoe for and RBI with a single to right center. Spini joined Donohoe on base with a single and Terrazas earned an RBI with a single through the right side. Gold earned the final RBI with a single to short.

ECU added the final three runs in the bottom of the seventh, for a 12-4 lead. Ayrado started the inning by being hit by a pitch. Torres got on with a single through the right side and both runners were advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Donohoe scored the RBI with a single through the left side and the bases were then loaded when Terrazas was hit by a pitch. Pomales garnered the final two RBIs with a double to left center.

Wellington then struck out five of the last six batters in the final two innings to give the Tigers the 12-4 victory.

ECU will hit the road for a three-game Great American Conference series at Arkansas-Monticello, March 28-29. A single game is slate for Friday, March 28 starting at 2 p.m. and a double-header is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29.
