For the first time in 2016, the East Central University baseball team earned a series win, splitting the final day with Ouachita Baptist (5-12, 3-6 GAC) in Great American Conference action. The Tigers (4-14, 4-5 GAC) fell in the opening game of the day, 8-1, and then rebounded to take a 3-2 nine-inning win in the scheduled seven inning game.
ECU was paced by senior Kris Molter, who tallied two hits and an RBI. Junior Trey Mound and junior Kaleb Matthews also hit .333 for the day, with Matthews earning two runs and both garnering a hit.
Sophomore Shae Edmonds added his second-straight win coming in to finish the last 2.1 innings of game two. Edmonds did not allow a hit or run in the time and struck out one. Junior Dylan Sanchez started the game and recorded eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
The Tigers will now get ready for a Tuesday, March 8 non-conference contest against Oklahoma City at Ken Turner Field starting at 2 p.m.
East Central 3, Ouachita 2 (9)
ECU was the first to strike in the second game of the day, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Riley Roberts started the game reaching due to an error and was sent to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Casey Kenney. Molter earned his RBI in the inning with a single to right.
The Tigers kept OBU off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when they tied the game at one on two hits.
The game remained knotted at one until the seventh. ECU scored a run in the inning after junior Thomas McGarry was walked, Molter hit a sacrifice bunt and junior Jake McKeel recorded a single.
However, Ouachita came out in the bottom of the inning and knotted the game once again with a single run to force extra innings.
The eighth went by with no scoring, but the Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth. McGarry started the inning reaching due to an error and Matthews was walked. Junior Kristian DeLaToree hit a single, but the runner was thrown out at home. A passed ball then sent the runners to second and third, allowing senior Trevor Huie to earn the RBI with a single through the left side.
OBU drew a walk with the first batter of the inning, but the ECU defense then kicked in and sent the next three batters back to the dugout for the 3-2 win.
Ouachita 8, East Central 1
OBU took an early 0-1 advantage after the first inning and increased the lead to 0-3 after a two-run fourth.
The Tigers cut into the lead in the seventh with a single run. Matthews, junior Kodiak O'Ravez and Kenney were all walked to load the bases, which allowed a run to score when Roberts grounded out to second.
Ouachita was the only team to get any more runs during the game, adding to their lead with a five-run eighth inning for the 1-8 victory.
