The East Central University men's basketball team claimed an 80-58 victory over Oklahoma Baptist in Great American Conference action at the Kerr Activities Center.
The Tigers (10-4, 6-2 GAC) were led by junior Ishmael Donzo, who garnered his second double-double of the season, with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Senior Stirling Thomas added 24 points and junior Braxton Reeves 23 points and eight assists.
ECU started the game on a hot streak, scoring 11 points in the first 2:30 before allowing the Bison (5-7, 1-7 GAC) to get on the scoreboard. OBU countered with a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 14.
The game remained close with low scoring in the next two minutes before the Tigers used a 7-0 run over two minutes to earn a 23-17 lead. The teams traded runs through the rest of the half, but it was the Tigers who finished on top, with a 39-30 advantage at the break.
The second half was close at first before the Bison started a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to four (45-41), with 15:25 left to play. ECU then went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to regain a double-digit advantage (56-41).
OBU fought back and cut the deficit to nine with seven minutes left, but the Tigers kept pushing the tempo and increased their lead to 20, with four minutes left. ECU kept up the pressure and led by as many as 23 on the way to the 80-58 victory.
Three-point shooting was the key to the victory, as the Tigers went 12-of-31 from beyond the arc and held the Bison to a 3-of-28 (10.7%) mark.
The Tigers will now prepare for a battle with arch rival Southeastern Oklahoma State, Monday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. ECU students will have several chances to win prizes provided by Patriot Ford, including a TV and Yeti cups.
