ECU Softball Splits Series at Henderson State

The East Central University softball team ended up splitting the Great American Conference series at Henderson State after finishing game two from the day before with a 0-3 loss. The Tigers (14-13, 11-5 GAC) then earned 4-2 win in eight innings in game three and fell 3-4 in the final game of the series.

ECU was led by senior Taylor Davis with a .571 batting average in the final two games. Taylor Davis garnered four hits and two runs.

Junior Sydney Dow picked up the win in game three of the series, throwing a complete game. She allowed two hits and two runs, while striking out six.

The Tigers will next be in action March 18-19 against Arkansas Tech at Tiger Field.

HSU 3, East Central 0
The first action of the day, was the conclusion of game two that hard started Sunday, but was forced to be finished Monday due to inclement weather in the area. The Tigers went into the day trailing 0-2 in the sixth inning.
The Reddies (14-15, 5-12 GAC) had taken the lead with a single run in the third and then a run in the sixth before the game was suspended.

When the team restarted the game, HSU added another run in the sixth and then sent the next three ECU batters back to the dugout for the 0-3 final.

The teams continued the day with an extra inning game for the third game in the series.

The Reddies started the scoring in the game, but jumping out to a 0-2 advantage in the first inning.

It took until the third inning for the Tigers to cut into the deficit, getting a single run for a 1-2 score. Taylor Davis started the inning with a double to center and was sent to third when senior Jordynn VanPelt groundout to the catcher. Dow earned the RBI with a ball hit to right field.

ECU then tied the game at two in the top of the seventh when sophomore Bre'Anna Davis hit her first home run of the year to center field.

The Tigers defense made sure HSU went three-up; three down in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra innings.

ECU made the most of the extra time by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth. Dow started the inning by drawing a walk. Junior Megan Birchfield replaced Dow on the base path and was sent to third due to a wild pitch. Senior Lauren Reeves sent the first run across the plate with a double to center. Reeves then went to third when Paolini grounded out, which allowed freshman Ellanee Allison singled to second base for the 4-2 lead.

The Reddies got three runners on in the bottom of the eighth inning, but could not get them past second and ECU held on for the 4-2 win.

Henderson State started the scoring in the game, going up 0-2 after the first inning.

The Tigers cut the disadvantage in half during the second inning, getting a run on doubles from freshman Caitlin Paolini and Bre'Anna Davis.

However, the Reddies pushed the lead out to 1-4 with a two-run fourth inning.

ECU pushed back in the sixth, earning two runs and getting the deficit down to 3-4. Taylor Davis led off the inning with a single and scored when VanPelt recorded her seventh home run of the year.

The Tigers could not get any closer as they went three-up; three down in the seventh for the 3-4 final.
