The East Central University softball team picked up two Great American Conference wins over Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Tigers (7-10, 4-2 GAC) first earned a 2-1 come-from-behind win and then took game two 8-3.
ECU was paced by senior Taylor Davis, who hit .571 for the game, scored twice, recorded four hits and four RBIs. Junior Carlee Henderson added a .667 average, with one run and two hits.
Senior Marissa Shaffer earned the win in the opening game of the day, allowing four hits and one run, while striking out three. Senior Lacey Paulk claimed the win in game two, striking out six and allowing four hits and three runs.
The teams will wrap up the four-game series, Sunday, Feb. 28 starting at noon at Tiger Field.
East Central 2, Northwestern 1
In the opening game of the day, defense was the name of the game. The Rangers (1-13, 0-6 GAC) were the first to score, taking a 0-1 lead after a home run in the third inning.
It took until the bottom of the seventh for ECU to get on the board. Henderson started the inning with a single up the middle and was sent to third when Taylor Davis reached due to an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Senior Autumn Suydam earned the first RBI with a single through the right side and the bases were then loaded when senior Jordynn VanPelt was intentionally walked.
NWOSU then got an out at home on the next at-bat, but junior Sydney Dow claimed the win for the Tigers with a walk-off single to right field.
East Central 8, Northwestern 3
The Tigers were the first to score in the second game of the day, with a single run in the second inning. Senior Lauren Reeves earned a single, Dow was walked and freshman Caitlin Paolini hit a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. That allowed a passed ball to send Reeves across the plate.
The Rangers fought back and took a 1-3 lead after the top of the third inning, but ECU didn't wait long to score.
The Tigers tied the game with a two-run third inning. After two outs, Taylor Davis and Suydam singled, which allowed VanPelt to record two RBIs with a double to right center.
ECU took the lead again with a run in the fourth inning. Dow was walked and scored when freshman Madison Thompson singled up the middle.
The Tigers added to the lead to secure the win with four runs in the sixth inning. After two outs, freshman Mariah Ewy walked, freshman Ellanee Allison singled and sophomore Bre'Anna Davis was walked to load the bases. That is when Taylor Davis stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam to left center for the 8-3 lead.
ECU only allowed on runner in the top of the seventh for NWOSU to claim the victory.
