The East Central University softball team took two rule-run wins from Ouachita Baptist in day one of the four-game Great American Conference series.
The Tigers (26-13, 23-8 GAC) were led by junior Taylor Davis, with a .667 average, four hits, two runs and one RBI. Junior Lauren Reeves added a .429 average, five RBIs, three hits and four runs for the day.
Junior Marissa Shaffer threw the first game, allowing four hits and zero runs in seven innings, while striking out four. Junior Lacey Paulk added a five-inning win in game two, allowing six hits and two runs and earning four strikeouts.
The teams will wrap up the series, Sunday, April 26 with a double-header set to start at 1 p.m.
Game 1 - ECU 8, OBU 0 (7)
The Tigers took and early 3-0 lead in the first inning. After the first out senior Kaile Marcum got on base with a single and after the second out was joined on base by senior Peyton Watson. Junior Lauren Reeves sent the first run home with a double to left field. Junior Autumn Suydam followed with a double down the left line to score the other two runs for the inning.
ECU added a run in the second for a 4-0 advantage. Sophomore Hayley Hyatt reached base with a one-out single and was sent to third on a single by junior Taylor Davis. The duo then combined to pull off the double-steal for the fourth run.
The Tigers pushed out to a 6-0 lead in the third. Watson singled and Reeves and senior Kayci Snider were walked to load the bases. That allowed two runs to score when junior Amanda Edmundson reached on an error.
ECU then put the game into the run-rule situation, with two more runs in the top of the seventh. After two outs, Reeves reached due to an error and Suydam singled. Senior Samantha McGraw then doubled to left to score two.
Game 2 - ECU 10, OBU 2 (5)
ECU jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first, earning the runs with two walks, a hit by pitch, an error and a single by Reeves.
Ouachita Baptist scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to one.
The Tigers responded with a run in the second on an error and a double by Davis (3-1).
OBU again countered to cut the deficit to one in the third to make the score 3-2.
However, ECU pushed the game open with five runs in the fourth. After one out Davis and Marcum singled and junior Jordynn VanPelt reached on a fielder's choice. That allowed Watson to earn an EBI with a single to right center. Reeves then reached on an error that scored two.
Suydam and McGraw followed her on base with singled and Snider sent two runs home when she also reached due to an error.
The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the fifth to push out to 10-2. Davis and Marcum were walked and VanPelt singled to load the bases. The runs then scored on two consecutive passed balls.
OBU got runners at second and third in the bottom of the inning, but the ECU defense held strong for the run-rule win.
