ECU Tigers Blank Oklahoma City 9-0

The East Central University baseball team recorded its first shutout of the season, defeating Oklahoma City 9-0 in the final non-conference game of the 2014 season.

The Tigers (26-20) saw four players with two hits and three with two RBIs for the game. Junior Luc Pomales also added two runs scored, with juniors Ty Huie, Casey Chenoweth and Ariel Adut earning the other hits.

Sophomore Jake Wellington earned the start, throwing the first three innings and allowing just one hit and striking out seven. Junior Oscar Gomez threw the next two innings and struck out one and earned the win. Junior Cam McKay added two innings with one hit and three Ks, while sophomore Casey Kenny and junior David Terrazas each threw an inning to round out the pitching staff.

Both teams had runners on in the opening innings, but held each other scoreless until Huie garnered a home run to left field in the top of the third for a 1-0 ECU lead.

The Tigers then added a run in the top of the fourth, with a double from Pomales and a sacrifice fly from Chenoweth for a 2-0 advantage.

ECU then put up four runs in the fifth. Adut started the inning by being hit by a pitch and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Huie. After a second out, junior Nick Spini reached due to an error to put runners on first and third. Spini then stole second, which allowed Adut to score from third.

Junior Bryce McKee was added to the bases with a walk, which allowed three runs to score when Pomales hit a shot over the left field fence for the 5-0 lead.

The Tigers increased their lead to 9-0 with three runs in the top of the sixth. Chenoweth started the inning with a home run to left. Junior Andrew Ayrado, Adut and Hue all hit singles to right to score the second run.

After the first out Spini drew a walk to load the bases. That allowed McKee to earn a sacrifice fly to right for the final run.

After ECU scored in the top of the sixth the scoring ended, with OC getting just one hit in the final four innings of the game.

The Tigers will now prepare for the final Great American Conference series of the 2014 season at Southeastern Oklahoma State, April 25-26. A single game is scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, April 25 and a double-header Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m.
