The East Central University volleyball team got swept twice in the final day of the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational. The Tigers (0-4) fell to Westminster 0-3 (20-25, 16-25, 19-25) and Eckerd 0-3 (14-25, 17-25, 14-25).
ECU was led by sophomore Madyson Gill, who tallied 15 kills, 13 digs, two service aces and two block solos in the matches. Senior Sarah Simpson added 14 kills and 13 digs, while sophomore Dahyana Essix led the way with 30 digs.
The Tigers will now return home to prepare for their next tournament, as they host the Tiger/Savage Storm Classic, Sept. 11-12 at the Kerr Activities Center. Matches start at noon on Friday, Sept. 11 and 10 .m. Saturday, Sept. 12.
ECU will face Oklahoma Panhandle State (2 p.m.) and Texas A&M-Commerce (7 p.m.) Friday and Fort Hays State (Noon) and William Jewell (7 p.m.) Saturday.
Westminster 3, East Central 0
The opening match of the day was a battle through all three sets, with the key difference coming at the service line, as the Griffons recorded 13 aces to just three by ECU.
Gill led the offensive charge for the Tigers with nine kills and a .350 (9k-2e-20ta) hitting percentage. Essix led the defensive charge with 19 digs.
The opening set was a close battle with six tie scores and two lead changes before Westminster earned a 20-25 win. However, the Griffons pulled away during the next two sets with 16-25 and 19-25 wins.
Eckerd 3, East Central 0
In the final match of the tournament, the Tigers struggled to get things going on offense, hitting .093 to .294 by Eckerd. Simpson led the team with eight kills and Essix garnered 11 digs.
The Tritons took early control of the set and never let up earned 14-25, 17-25 and 14-25 wins.
