The East Central University volleyball team picked up its second straight win of the 2014 season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-22) sweep of Bacone College at the Kerr Activities Center in non-conference action.
The Tigers (3-11, 0-3 GAC) were led by freshman Madison Gill, who garnered her third-straight double-double. and sixth of the season. with 10 kills and 13 digs. Junior Sarah Simpson added her sixth double-double of the year with 10 kills and 13 digs. ECU spread out its offense and defense in the match with eight players recording at least one kill and dig each.
The Lady Warriors (5-7) took an early lead in the opening set (3-5) before ECU used a 4-2 run to tie the set at seven. The teams then traded the next four serves before a 3-0 run gave the Tigers a 12-9 advantage. Bacone pushed back and tied the set at 13, 15 and 16. The Tigers then took control of the set, using a 9-2 run to finish with a 25-18 win.
The second set started out close with three ties in the first 10 points, but ECU then rattled off five straight points push the momentum in their favor for good. The Tigers used several runs throughout the set to pull away with a 25-14 win.
ECU gained control early in the third set, taking a 10-2 advantage. The Tigers had built the lead to 18-7 when the Lady Warriors started to push back and went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to seven (18-11). Bacone kept fighting and used 4-0 run to get within three (23-20). ECU claimed the next point before the Lady Warriors held off two match points before falling 25-22.
The Tigers will now hit the road for two Great American Conference matches over the weekend. ECU will first face Arkansas-Monticello, Friday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. and then Southern Arkansas Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.
