ECU softballers settle for split with visiting Truman State

The freshmen tandem of Chelsea Patterson and Peyton Watson collected three hits apiece while senior Emily Kennemer homered as East Central University rolled to a 13-10 victory over Truman State (Mo.) Tuesday in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader at Lady Tiger Field.
Truman State held off ECU for a 4-3 decision in the second game.
The Lady Tigers moved to 10-9 on the season with the split while the Bulldogs went to 7-10.

ECU 13, Truman State 10 (Game 1)
The Lady Tigers overcame a 3-0 deficit with a nine-run third inning to hold on for the win.
Patterson went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Watson was 3-for-4 and scored twice as she had a triple. Watson also circled the bases on a two-run single which went under the glove for an error and rolled to the fence during the nine-run third inning.
Kennemer, Shelby Simmons, Ali Manship and Lacey Williams each went 2-for-4 from the plate. Kennemer knocked in four runs, including a two-run homer. Simmons had one RBI and scored twice. Manship had one RBI and scored once and Williams drove in a pair of runs and scored once.
Each team finished with 16 hits in the game played with near 30-mile-per-hour winds.
ECU pounded out eight hits in the third as Kennemer’s RBI single triggered the scoring. Manship and Williams had back-to-back run-scoring single of their own. Patterson, with the bases loaded, singled to left and came around to score as did three other Lady Tigers on the play.
Simmons brought home another run in the inning off a sacrifice fly to right and Kennemer’s RBI groundout scored the ninth run of the frame.
After Truman State got to within 9-8 with a five-run fourth, the Lady Tigers added a run in the fourth off Williams’ double to left, scoring Watson, who had singled with one out.
ECU upped the advantage to 12-8 in the fifth when Simmons singled up the middle and Kennemer homered to center.
The Lady Tigers picked up their final score in the sixth when Patterson tripled to left-center and scored off Brianna Baron’s sacrifice fly to center.
Manship (4-5) got the pitching win in relief of the starter Amanda Madden. Manship threw the final six innings and allowed 13 hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Kelsey Bollman and Laura Miller each went 4-for-5 for the Bulldogs. Bollman hit a homer and drove in four runs.
Kirsten Krause (1-4) took the pitching loss.

Truman State 4, ECU 3 (Game 2)
Bridget Schade hit a three-run homer in the third inning which proved to be the difference.
Truman State took a 1-0 lead in the second before going up 4-0 in the third.
The Lady Tigers pulled within 4-2 in the bottom half of the third off Cami Correa’s RBI single and Watson’s sacrifice fly.
The game was scoreless through the next three innings.
In the seventh, Patterson led off with a single up the middle and scored off Desiree Nordie’s double to left center.
But a strikeout, line-out and fly-out ended the game as Kelsea Dorsey got the win in relief of Ashley Rotkvich.
Brianna Nunley (5-4) took the pitching loss, despite scattering eight hits in going the seven-inning distance. All four runs were earned as she allowed just two walks and struck out nine.
Kennemer was ECU’s only multiple-hitter, going 2-for-4 with the two doubles and a run scored.
The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play a four-game Great American Conference series at Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday and Sunday with both doubleheaders set for 1 p.m.
