Franz Earns 300th Career Win with 65-57 Win Over Henderson State

East Central University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Kent Franz earned his 300th career win when the Lady Tigers defeated Henderson State, 65-57, at the Kerr Activities Center in Great American Conference Action.

More important to Franz was that ECU moved to 14-4 overall and 9-3 in GAC action with the win. The Lady Tigers were led by sophomore Dilan Webster, who tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Senior Kodi Morrison added 10 points and five rebounds, while junior Alycea Price tallied eight points and 10 boards.

The Lady Reddies (10-8, 5-7 GAC) opened the game with a 7-0 run in the first 2:30, but ECU countered with a 7-0 run of its own to tie the game a minute later. The teams then traded points and runs over the next seven minutes, but kept the score within four points.

With 9:21 left the score was knotted for the fourth team in the half at 21 points, when HSU went on a 6-0 run to take a five-point lead. The Lady Tigers went on a 4-0 run, over the next minute, to cut the deficit to one (26-27), but the Lady Reddies ended the half with a 4-2 run and took a 28-31 advantage into the locker room.

ECU came out of the locker room ready to fight and tied the game at 37, with 13:43 left to play. The teams then traded points for the next 1:30 before a 6-0 run by the Lady Tigers gave them a 45-39 advantage, with 10 minutes left on the clock.

HSU made another push over the next three minutes and cut the lead to one (49-48), but ECU countered with a 5-0 run to take the lead for good. The Lady Tigers kept pushing and built their lead out to as many as 12 in the final minutes of play before earning the 65-57 win.

Rebounding and free-throw shooting became the keys to the game. ECU made 16-of-21 attempts at the charity stipe, while only allowing the Lady Reddies to get to the line nine times (eight makes). The Lady Tigers also earned a 46-31 lead in the rebounding column that included a 19-7 lead in offensive boards.

ECU will face Ouachita Baptist, Saturday, Feb. 2 in a key GAC contest between the two Tiger teams. OBU is currently first in the conference standings at 10-2, with ECU in third at 9-3. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Kerr Activities Center with the annual Hall of Fame ceremony taking place between the women’s and men’s games.
