NCTC Tennis Qualifies for Regionals

The North Central Texas College Lady Lions tennis team will be heading to the NJCAA National Tournament after a strong showing at the recent NJCAA Region V tournament held in Plano.

The Lady Lions finished second at the regional tournament behind first-place Collin College.

In their dual matches at the tournament, NCTC defeated Temple College and New Mexico Military Institute. Their only loss was to Collin.

NCTC started the tournament with a 7-2 loss to Collin. The Lady Lions got a win at No. 2 doubles as the team of Amy Leiu and Katy Foster won their match 6-3, 6-3. The other win came at No. 4 singles as Foster won 6-3, 6-3.

Later that same day, NCTC came back to edge Temple 5-4.

The Lady Lions won two of the three doubles matches. Leiu and Foster won their match 6-1, 7-5. The team of Sheridan McKissick and Elizabeth Arens won their match 6-3, 6-1.

The Lady Lions needed to win at least three of the six singles matches. Leiu got a win at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1 and Foster defeated her opponent at No. 4 singles 6-7, 6-0, 6-3. Then at No. 5 singles, McKissick won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to clinch the team victory.

On the second day of the tournament, NCTC defeated NMMI 6-3.

The Lady Lions won all three doubles matches. The team of Georgie Gosen and Alexandria Rodriguez won 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5). The team of Leiu and Foster won 6-1, 6-1, while McKissick and Arens won their match by forfeit.

NCTC won two singles matches by forfeit and Foster added another win at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Now the Lady Lions will turn their attention to the National tournament, which will be held in Tyler this year. Play begins on Sunday, May 5. The tournament runs through May. 8.
