The Austin College women’s basketball team went through a 10 minute scoring drought midway through the first half and was never able to recover in a 72-53 loss to Carthage College on Tuesday evening in Hughey Gymnasium. The ’Roos are now 3-5 overall on the year.
The ’Roos jumped out to a 10-6 lead early on behind three points apiece from Kersti Marusich and Shayna Clardy, but for nearly 10 minutes of action were unable to score as the Lady Reds used an 18-0 run to take a 24-10 advantage. Austin College finally managed to snap their scoreless streak on a bucket by Marusich to make it 24-12 with 4:31 left in the half, and four more points from Marusich helped the ‘Roos trim the margin to 32-20 at the half.
Austin College cut it to a 38-27 lead early in the second half on an Erin Riley three point play and a Courtney Kenisky layup kept it at 41-30 with 12:57 on the clock, but a 9-3 run by Carthage made it 50-34 with under 10 minutes to play. The lead grew to 21 on a Diana Jacklin bucket with 6:41 left to make it 57-36, and the ’Roos were unable to get the margin under 15 the rest of the way despite nine points from Clardy in the final six minutes in the 19 point defeat.
Marusich finished with 13 points and five rebounds to pace Austin College and Clardy added 12 points and a team-best three assists. Brooke Melton and Spenser Cruikshank each had nine rebounds to lead the ’Roos, who owned a 40-36 rebounding edge in the game.
