Southeastern opened its series against Southwestern Oklahoma State with a double-header sweep on Sunday, taking the opener 2-1 before turning on the offense for as 16-4 win in five innings in game two in Weatherford, Okla.
The wins lift the Savage Storm to 27-18 overall on the season and 21-7 in Great American Conference play with the final two games of the series set for an noon double-header on Monday.
The wins, combined with a Henderson State split in its series opening twinbill at Arkansas Tech, allow SE to close to within a game of first-place in the GAC standings with six games to play, including the season-ending four-game series between the two teams.
Through the first five innings of the opener, the Storm put runners in scoring opposition just twice and found itself trailing 1-0 heading into the sixth inning.
However Sydney Kramer would lead off the sixth with a single, followed by a Courtney Riddle double which set up an RBI single for Laramie Beal to tie the game and a Haley Strawn RBI fielder's choice would give SE a 2-1 lead which was all it would need to pick up the win in the series opener.
Riddle posted a pair of this in the game, while Jessica Simmons, Kramer, Beal, Strawn and Darrian Williams each added one.
Beal and Strawn had the team' only two RBI.
Jessica Seay got the start, but left after 4.1 innings, only to return for the final out of the game to earn her first save of the season. She allowed a run on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Jacee Bennett picked up the win after tossing 2.1 innings in relief and allowing just one hit and no runs with one strikeout.
Game two was the polar opposite of the opener, with the Storm matching its run total in the top of the first inning thanks for a Riddle sac fly and an Arianna Jones RBI single.
The Storm added three more in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Beal, followed by a two-run double by Strawn for a 5-0 lead.
Southeastern exploded in the third inning, putting up six hits and taking advantage of a pair of SWOSU errors to pile on seven more runs and open up a 12-0 lead.
In the inning the Storm got RBI hits from Simmons, Jones and Breanna Smith as well as an RBI groundout by Beal and a pair of runs courtesy of a throwing error.
The Bulldogs got three runs back in the bottom of the third, but the SE offense went back to work in the fourth with an RBI single by Strawn, followed by Riddle scoring on an illegal pitch.
The inning rounded out with Shaina Crites scoring due to an error and Williams doubling to right to plate Strawn and open up a 16-3 lead.
SWOSU would pick up a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to hold off the run-rule in a 16-4 Storm win.
Bennett picked up the win after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits in a complete game effort of five innings with six strikeouts.
Eight different Southeastern hitters had hits, with five of them turning in multi-hit outings.
Strawn finished the game 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, while Williams added a three-hit contest.
Simmons, Crites and Jones each added two hits, with Riddle, Kramer and Smith posting one each.
