DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern snagged its first Great American Conference win and snapped a four-match losing skid, doing both in a dominating 3-0 win over rival East Central on Thursday evening in Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
The win lifts the Savage Storm to 3-8 overall on the year and 1-2 in GAC play, but they cannot sit back and celebrate long as the team will be back on the road on Friday Sept. 25 for an out-of-conference matchup with Texas A&M-Commerce at 6 p.m. in Commerce, Texas.
SE was impressive in nearly every category on Thursday, hitting .351 as a team over three sets with 44 kills, while adding five blocks and 40 digs, while holding the Tigers to a .088 hitting percentage .
Abby Jameson led all attackers with 13 kills on the night while hitting .385, while Julia Benford was right on her heels and just as impressive with 12 kills while hitting .600 and not committing a single attack error.
Jessica Baker added nine on the match and Kristina Bergman chipped in six.
Alissa Benson triggered the offense with 38 assists over the three-set match while also adding five digs and three blocks.
Charlene Nerio collected 13 of the team's 40 digs, while Jameson and Bergman each added seven.
At the net, Benson led the way with three blocks, while Benford and Caitlyn Mills each added two.
The Storm opened up with a 6-3 lead and would later pull away in the first set with a 9-2 run that turned a three point lead into a 21-11 advantage, eventually winning the set 25-16.
SE opened up with a 6-3 lead in the second set as well, but reeled off a 13-2 run to pull away in a hurry and take the second set 25-13.
Southeastern did not let off the gas pedal in the third set, again jumping ahead 6-3 before using a 5-1 run to go up 11-5.
The Storm would hold ECU at arm's length for the rest of the match, eventually scoring four of the final five points to put away a 25-17 win in the clinching set.
