SOSU beats ECU in Overtime

Southeastern defeated the East Central Tigers, 74-73 at Bloomer Sullivan Arena in Great American Conference action.

The Tigers (8-17, 5-14 GAC) were led by junior Colby Carr and freshman Braxton Reeves. Carr garnered 20 points and five rebounds, while Reeves hit a career-best 17 points and added three rebounds.

ECU came out ready to fight from the start of the game, scoring the first five points of the half. The Tigers pushed the lead out to 11-4 before the Savage Storm (15-10, 11-8 GAC) went on their first run of the game. Southeastern cut the lead to three (11-8), with a 4-0 run, but The Tigers again used a 10-2 run to gain an advantage. This time the lead went out to 11 (21-10).

The Savage Storm cut the deficit to six (23-17), with a 5-0 run, and the teams kept the score within five to eight points until the final 4:38 of the half. That is when the Tigers used a 7-0 run to regain a 31-21 lead. The teams traded points over the final 1:45 and ECU went into the locker room with a 38-26 advantage.

The second half started as a true representation of the battle in the series, with the teams trading shots for the first eight minutes. During the span the Tigers kept the advantage between nine and 13 points. However, with 12:01 remaining in the half the Savage Storm cut the deficit to five (52-47) with an 8-0 run over the next four minutes.

The teams then each scored a free throw and a triple before both went cold for the next two minutes. The Savage Storm were the first to get back into the scoring rhythm and took their first lead of the game with 3:10 remaining (56-57) on a 7-0 run. Southeastern continued the run to 11-1 until 25 seconds were left on the clock for a 57-61 advantage.

Reeves then hit a three to cut the disadvantage to one (60-61), but the Savage Storm had a wide open shot down the court five seconds later to go back up three. Reeves got one more chance at a three to tie the game with seven seconds remaining and made his second in a row to force overtime.

Southeastern took advantage of shots with the clock stopped at the start of the extra stanza, making four free-throws before ECU tallied its first points of the stanza. The Savage Storm continued to make their shots at the charity stripe, going on an 8-2 run before either team made a basket in the extra session.

The Tigers hit the first basket of the extra time with 1:32 remaining and it started a 5-0 run that cut the lead to one (70-71), but the Savage Storm made their first basket of the extra stanza with 16.3 left on the clock to regain a 70-73 lead. ECU was not able to convert on their attempt with seven seconds left and the Savage Storm added one more points at the free-throw line. Fisher hit a long three at the buzzer, but it was not enough and Southeastern took a 73-74 win.
