Sherman hires offensive and defensive coordinators

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Sherman Bearcats coaching staff is starting to take shape.

New Head Football Coach J.D. Martinez named his coordinators, Derek Thompson from Denton High School will be the new offensive coordinator and Mark Wilkinson from Callisburg is the new defensive coordinator.

Thompson spent the last two years as the quarterbacks coach in Denton. Before that he was a three-year starting quarterback for North Texas, where he holds numerous records and led the Mean Green to a victory in the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl game his senior season, North Texas' first bowl game in nine years. Thompson was named MVP of the game after throwing for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

Wilkinson, who is also a University of North Texas graduate, served as the defensive coordinator last season for 3A's Callisburg High School. He helped guide the Wildcats to a 10-3 record and a trip to the Regional Semifinals. Wilkinson previoulsy served as the linebacker and defensive line coach at Birdville High School and offensive and defensive line coach at Fossil Ridge High School.
