Softball Slips Slightly in NFCA Poll

Southeastern softball slipped slightly in the NFCA Division II Top 25 after a 2-2 weekend series, dropping to No. 5 in the poll released on Wednesday.

The Savage Storm are 21-6 on the season, but are coming off a four-game=split in its weekend series against Henderson State which dropped their Great American Conference record to 6-2.

SE was unable to take advantage of then-No. 1 Valdosta State dropping two games on the week, which would have opened the door for SE to take over the top spot.

Instead West Texas A&M at 19-1 on the season jumps from No. 3 to No. 1 in the poll with 393 points and 13 of the 16 first place votes. The Storm handed the Buffs their only loss of the season at the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic.

VSU drops one spot to No. 2 with 377 points and retains two first-place votes with a 20-5 record on the year.

Indianapolis (Pa.) also leapfrogs SE, going from No. 4 to No. 3 with one first place vote and 368 total points with an 18-2 record on the season.

Armstrong Atlantic jumps from No. 6 to No. 4 with a 17-2-1 record and is just four points ahead of the Storm at No. 5 with 339 points.

This marks the fourth-consecutive week that Southeastern has been ranked in the top five nationally.

SE also remains the only GAC schools in the top 25, while two other Central region schools remain in the rankings.

In-state rival and current MIAA member Central Oklahoma moves up one spot in the poll this week from No. 9 to No. 8 with a 14-4 record, while fellow MIAA member Fort Hays State jumps into the poll at No. 21 with a 13-3 record.

Southeastern will be back on the diamond March 15-16 for a key four-game GAC series against Arkansas-Monticello beginning with a double-header at 1 p.m. on March 15, followed by another twinbill at noon on March 16.

UAM is currently leading the league with a 5-1 conference record, while the Storm is in second at 6-2.
