Softball Sweeps SNU on Friday

No. 5 Southeastern allowed just one run over two games en route to a double-header sweep of Southern Nazarene on Friday afternoon, taking game one 3-0 and following that with a 6-1 win in game two at the Southeastern Softball Field.

The wins lifted the Savage Storm to 27-6 overall on the year and 12-2 in Great American Conference play with the final two games of the four-game set against the Crimson Storm set for noon on Saturday.

All four SE pitchers saw action on the day, and while they scattered 13 hits over two contests the staff managed to work itself out of three bases loaded jams and strand 16 SNU runners overall.

Mindy McElroy got the start in the series opener and came one out away from recording a complete game shutout, but finished with her 11th win of the year after scattering five hits over 6.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Jacee Bennett came on to record one out, doing so with a strikeout, to end the sixth inning with the bases loaded.

On the offensive side, The Storm spread five hits over five different hitters, with Jessica Simmons, Courtney Moore, Whitney Hamilton, Laramie Beal and Paige Priest each recording a hit.

Darrian Williams, Hamilton and Rachel Jones each drove in a run.

SE got on the board in the first inning when Williams was hit by a pitch with two outs and followed by stealing second. She would come home on a Hamilton hit.

The lead would move to 2-0 in the second inning as Beal doubled to lead off and was replaced by pinch-runner Kelsey Overacker who moved to third on a Priest sac bunt and scored on a Jones squeeze bunt.

In the fifth, Simmons would lead off with a single and steal second. She moved to third on a Lacie Cook sac bunt and scored on a Williams groundout to fashion he 3-0 final.

In game two, Bennett got the start and allowed a run on five hits with four K's in 4.0 innings of work to earn her 15th win of the season.

Shayna Milam tossed 1.2 innings in relief, allowing a pair of hits while striking out one, before handing the ball to Jones who three the final 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit and struck out one.

Simmons, Moore and Lauren Renneker each posted two-hit outings, while Courtney Riddle, Bennett and Brittany Wilson each added a hit.

Moore and Renneker each drove in two runs, while Williams and Riddle added an RBI each.

Renneker also connected on her third home run of the season.

SNU actually jumped to the early lead with a run in the top half of the first inning, but the Storm had an answer in the bottom half when Simmons walked and stole second before coming around to score on a Williams sac fly to center to even the score at 1-1.

In the second inning, Bennett would reach on a one-out double and score two batters later on a Renneker single to left-center.

The score would double to 4-1 in the third as Williams led off with a walk and scored when Moore doubled in the next at bat. Dakota Palmer would come on to run for Moore and move to third on a Hamilton sac bunt and score on batter later when Riddle doubled down the left-field line.

Renneker would then lead off the fourth inning with a homer to centerfield that was nearly robbed, but deflected off the centerfielder's glove and on over the wall to make the lead 5-1.

Simmons would follow that with a single and a stolen base before moving to third on a Cook sac bunt. She would score two batters later on a Moore single, moving the advantage to 6-1 which would hold to be the final score.
