Southeastern set to host South Central Classic

For the first time since the 2007 season Southeastern volleyball will make its home debut on or before the second weekend of the season as it hosts one half of the South Central Classic on Sept. 13-14 in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

During that 2007 season, the Savage Storm opened the year at home as it hosted the Texoma Challenge and opened the season with a 2-1 record.

The 2013 SE team comes into the second weekend of the year with a 2-2 mark after posting wins over Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern State at the Pitt State Classic to open the year.

The South Central Classic is co-hosted by East Central and features a format where the teams that play in Durant on Friday will make the short drive up to Ada for Saturday matches, and vice versa.

The event tips off in Durant at 11 a.m. on Friday with Southern Nazarene and Cameron, followed by the Storm taking on Mid-America Christian at 1 p.m.

The afternoon opens with SNU and MACU at 5 p.m. and day one ends with SE facing former conference foe CU.

For Saturday, two new teams will come to town with SNU remaining in Durant.

Saturday will open with The Crimson Storm facing Central Oklahoma at 11 a.m., with Southeastern and Maryville playing at 1 p.m.

SNU and MU will play at 3:30 p.m. and the event will wrap up with SE facing another former conference foe in UCO.

As mentioned SE comes into the weekend with a 2-2 record and wins over a pair of MIAA schools.

Sophomore outside hitter Megan Kunkel earned Great American Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after posting a conference best 4.57 kills per set for the opening weekend.

Southern Nazarene comes to Durant with a 1-3 record on the season, with the win coming against Eastern New Mexico at the Midwestern State Hampton Inn-vitational.

CU comes to town with a 2-2 record after winning games over Christian Brothers and Alabama-Huntsville at the Henderson State Tournament.

MACU posted back-to-back wins over Langston and Texas College, but opened the season with a four-game losing streak.

MU enters the event with a 2-3 record with wins over St. Ambrose and Bemidji State.

The Bronchos boast a 4-0 record after one week of play after sweeping UAH, CU, Henderson State and Southern Arkansas at the HSU Tournament last weekend.
