Southwestern Takes Two from Austin College Softball

The Austin College softball team fell in both halves of its doubleheader today against Southwestern University, falling 7-0 in game one before dropping a 13-3 decision in game two. The ‘Roos are now 10-12 overall and 5-11 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the losses.

In game one, the ‘Roos and Pirates took a scoreless game into the fourth inning, but Southwestern’s bats came alive with a six run frame to go on top 6-0. Berkeley Bacon got things started with a solo homer, and Sydney Oorlog added a two run double. Three more runs came home in the inning to help Southwestern take a commanding lead. One more run would cross in the sixth to make it 7-0, and Austin College was unable to get its offense going the rest of the way.

Victoria Herrera took the loss, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits in 7.0 innings of work. Raquel Vara went 2-for-4 with a double to lead Austin College as the ‘Roos were limited by Cozette Palmer to just four hits. Palmer tossed a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts to get the win for Southwestern.

In game two, Southwestern jumped on top 1-0 after the first inning and added four more runs – three unearned – in the second to go ahead 5-0. Austin College would get back three runs in the bottom half of the inning, with Felicia Rivera, Delaney England, and Vara all driving in a run to cut it to a 5-3 game.

However, two more unearned runs would come home for the Pirates in the third to make it a 7-3 game. That remained the score until the top of the sixth, when Southwestern pushed six more runs across to make it a 13-3 game, and that’s how things would end. Southwestern scored all six of its runs in the inning with two outs.

Sophia Hernandez took the loss for Austin College after giving up 13 runs – eight earned – on 16 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Briana Hernandez and England each finished 2-for-3 in the loss. Three players had three hits for Southwestern, while Alyssa Novander picked up the victory in the circle for the Pirates.
