SHAWNEE, OKLA. - The East Central University baseball team claimed its third series win of the 2016 season by splitting a doubleheader at Oklahoma Baptist in Great American Conference action. The Tigers (10-21, 10-1 GAC) first fell 1-11 in eight innings and then took a 1-0 win.
ECU was led by senior Casey Kenney and junior Kaleb Matthews, who hit .333 for the day, with two hits each.
Sophomore Shae Edmonds picked up the win on the mound, throwing a complete game shutout, with just two hits allowed and three Ks.
The Tigers will now get ready for the final non-conference game of the season, Tuesday, April 5 against Dallas Christian at 3 p.m. at Ken Turner Field.
East Central 1, Oklahoma Baptist 0
The Tigers scored the lone run in the final game of the series in the third inning. Junior JT Stevenson started the inning by ending up on second due to an error by the shortstop. After the first out, sophomore Dalton Etheredge put runners on second and third with a double to right. Kenny loaded the bases when he drew a walk, which allowed senior Kris Molter to earn the RBI with a sacrifice fly to center.
Defense was strong in the game for both teams, with ECU getting just two other runners on base and the Bison (23-10, 14-7 GAC) three for the game.
Oklahoma Baptist 11, East Central 1 (8)
The Tigers were the first to score in the opening game of the day, talking a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Molter was walked and after two outs Matthews hit a double to right to earn the RBI.
However, OBU countered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. The Bison added a run in the fourth, two in the sixth, five in the seventh and one in the eighth for the 1-11 final.
