East Central University football senior Jameel Whitney has been named the Great American Conference Defensive Player of the Week for Nov. 2 after helping the Tigers (6-3, 6-3 GAC) earn a 21-18 win over Arkansas-Monticello last week.
The Oklahoma City, Okla., native recorded 11 (8-3) total tackles, had a quarterback hurry and added a key sack for 10 yards. The sack came at the end of the Boll Weevils (1-8, 1-8 GAC) final offensive drive and forced UAM out of field goal range that would have tied the game. The Boll Weevils kicker attempted a 51-yard field goal after Whitney's 10-yard sack and came up about five to 10 yards short on the attempt.
Whitney is the Tigers career tackle leader, with 295 after his performance against UAM. Whitney took over the record set in 2012 by Norris Wrenn of 278.
ECU will finish out the 2015 season on the road, with the first of two games set for Saturday, Nov. 7 at Southern Arkansas at 2 p.m.
